Iguana - People of Belize

For over 5000 years to present day, the Iguanas has been hunted for their meat. Today in some parts of Belize the meat of the Iguana is nick named "Bamboo Chicken". The Iguanas are hunted for their meat and eggs; this makes the females more of a target for hunters or a predator. The Iguana reaction to danger is what make them an easy meal, when frighten the Iguana simple leap to the river or what over body of water maybe below it and wait for the hunter or predator to leave the water.

The Iguana today is regarded as an endangered species, this is due to the hunting of mainly females, now the Iguanas can only be hunted at a certain time, this give to females a chance to reproduce. In some places, hatcheries have been established.

Once such Iguana Hatchery is located about a mile or so away from Cahal PechVillage Resort. At the hatchery the Iguanas are nurtured from the birth and the release into the wild at the right age. The hatchery is enclosed with a net, many small trees and a small pond; incubators can be seen in the enclosure, which contains over a 100 iguanas.

Money River, Sittee River, San Ignacio Town to near to Macal River are justa few places where the spiece still thrive in Belize.
